The Host Is in Theatres March 29, 2013.

THE HOST WILL BE IN THEATRES MARCH 29, 2013!

Yes, this is official.  The film will be shot in Louisiana and New Mexico (thank god) starting in February 2012.  Andrew Niccol is still attached to direct and Saoirse Ronan is still starring as Melanie Stryder.

AND Open Road Films is officially the US distributor of the film.  Fun Fact: Open Road is a collaboration between Regal Entertainment and AMC Entertainment.

Stephenie Meyer said this about Open Road Films. “I’m thrilled to be adding another fantastic partner to an already amazing group. Everyone involved has so much passion for the project. It really is a dream team.”

Update:  Apparently, I wrote down the wrong date.  It is not the 19th, but the 29th.  I can’t believe I noticed this over a month later.  All dates in this post and the title have been changed to reflect the right date.

So, we get an official release date … 4 and 1/2 years after the original announcement. ;p

Still, if that’s the time it takes to make the best Host movie possible, I won’t complain. This is getting exciting!

    • I agree that it is a long time to wait, but I would rather have a long wait for a good movie than a short wait for horrendous movie.

  • JMT2cu

    YEAH 🙂  }}}JUMPIN FOR JOY{{{

    • JMT2cu

Too bad it is in 2013 and not 2012 🙁

  • Erin M.

been waiting for this for over a year. hope it doesn’t fall through.

  • person

i dont want her playing Melanie, shes going to ruin the whole film

  • Aditeemane

I absolutely hate the fact that it is being filmed in New Mexico and LOUISIANA. Seriously? As someone who lives 30 miles from Picacho Peak I was really looking forward to seeing it in the movie. Guess everyone hates Arizona. Louisiana. Give me a BREAK. I deep south is NOTHING like Arizona, and vice versa.

    • Marjolaf21

Well, parts of the story happens in San Fransisco. And then there’s Chicago, where Melanie gets caught, and all the flashbacks. If they stick to the cities, any place can look like anywhere, really. It’s part of the movie magic.

    • My guess is that Arizona will be used for exterior shots, and they will probably build the cave on a soundstage in Louisiana.

    • Hanksjlmcj

Ever heard of the Carlsbad Caverns in NM? They fit perfectly with the story.

      • hanksjlmcj

Plus, they don’t fly everyone out from L.A. to shoot the movie. The whole crew is hired in their own state. I don’t know about Louisiana, but New Mexico has a lot of movies made there, because of the availibiliy of movie resources. I do wish it could be shot in AZ, though. More true to the story.

  • Finally!!!  So glad to hear this news.  Casting calls???

  • Brigitte

I will cry if Ronan plays Melanie!! She looks like a 12 year old! Not a tall, strong, athletic brunette! Missy Peregrym pleeeeeeeeease!!!

    • Sunshine

yea!!!! Missy would be stinkin perfect!! I was thinkin sophia bush but either would work for me! their both strong and athletic but have a soft feminine side to them too really. maaan ronan is so WRONG for this part. ugh.

    • choccie88

ronan is perfect for the part! have you seen what she looks like recently? she is perfect, maybe a little pale but make up will see to that.

    • Tortuga_power539

Missy Peregrym would be perfect as Melanie. Not this little blonde blue eyed kid. What the hell is that.

      • Magaray

And Kristen Stewart would be totally wrong to play Bella.  After all, Kristen blonde hair and blue eyes. Yes I am on team Saoirse.

  • femftle26

    im so excited…..

  • Susan

Stephanie, I sure hope this movie is as good as the book…but that is expecting a whole lot.  Love your work.  Be involved in the process.

  • Molsen_ice_2000

Ronan is NOT a good match to play Melanie. You need to find someone that is athletic, rugged. Not a barbie doll.

    • Magaray

Ronan is 5’6″.  I read an earlier post that said Ronan looked like a 6 year old.  Molsen_ice writes that Melanie is athletic, rugged and not a Barbie.  Another follower described Melanie being dark and hazel eyes.  I saw who was cast as Katnis…. a blonde actress.  Come one people.  You need to consider that who ever plays Melanie must also convince us that Wanda is “The Soul”.  Saoirse is Melanie/Wanda.  Go rent Hanna when it comes out.  You will agree with me.

  • Susan Payne

I am concerned like the others about Soirse Ronan playing Melanie.  I know she is a big star now and would be a box office draw but she really needs to train and get some real muscles for this role if she plays it.  It won’t go over well in the movie if they put a small girl in the role of Melanie while she is attacked and hated like in the book.

  • genners

I could see Saoirse playing Pet at the end but not Melanie she just isnt buff enough. This girl needs to be tough, a surviviour cant see Saoirse being that girl unfortunately.

    • Magaray

You obviously have not seen Hanna;  and I do not mean Montana

  • genners

She is so not right for this part she’s not buff enough for it.

  • snigdha

i dont think i can watch the movie if saoirse plays melanie, its sooo sick….. she seems NOTHING lyk mel……

    • Magaray

Like I posted above.  Go see Hanna.  You will change your mind about Saoirse.  She is quite the actress and will pull it of.  Expand your knowledge.

      • idk she still looks too young. we’ll see i guess.. and ill pray that she plays a good Melanie.

        • Magaray

When Jared discovered Mel and took her to his cabin, he did not want to…. you know.. because she was only 17 years old.  When Wandered/Melanie reach the cave, she gets punched by her aunt, slugged by Jared and choked by Ian.  What image do you get from that episode?  Ronan will look fine and her acting will knock your socks off.  Thx for at least keeping an open mind Jessica.

          • Alli

I  agree, Saoirse is an astounding actress and she’ll do a fantastic job of it. She’s a real actress, she’ll be able to pull off the tough look. From the book I got Mel as being a “runner” type athlete. Meaning fit but skinny, not butch.
Sophia Bush might look the part for most people here but I found her acting mediocre at best (my own opinion of course!).
Saoirse will be older when they start filming… and anybody heard of make up, hair dye, etc…
Can’t wait for the film, it’s sure to be great if the rest of the cast is as talented as Saoirse Ronan.

    • Magaray

Something tells me you will change your mind and go to the movie when it comes out.

  • Susan

Tell Stephenie I am happy for her.  Most of us on this blog are extreme fans of the book and really want it to turn out great as a movie.  That is why it is so important to us that the characters are cast appropriately.  I have kids who do movies and tv spots so I understand how it works.  I am so glad the movie is coming out and until then…when can we expect Stephenie’s next book???

  • xx-hope-xx

Pleeeease tell me that jensen ackles is playing jared!!! He’s perfect for the role!

    • Magaray

I must admit I have not seen jensen act but he fits the image I created in my mind. I like the fact that he is not a “big” star a la Brad Pitt et al.  He gets my vote.  Can he act?

    • daisy

god no, he is too old and not fit/hot at all!!!

    • Emily

      he is a little old

  • Magaray

Soirse is 5’6″ and growing.  She trained for her role in Hanna.  In it, she took on Eric Bana (Hector in the movie “Troy”) and other thugs who were out to “kill” her.  I don’t remember Melanie/Wandered fighting or using her muscles other than to fall down an elevator shaft and walking in the Arizona desert.  The muscle Wanda exhibits is in her courage.

    • Marjolaf21

It’s good to see someone defending the choice of Soirse as Mel/Wanda with so much passion. She wasn’t my first choice (I don’t think she was anyone’s first job) but I can see the potential, and seeing so many people just dismiss her and saying her casting ruins the movie really annoys me.

I have just one tiny nit-pick. The novel mentions several times that Melanie is, or at least was, a runner, and that she’s good at soccer. She would need some muscles for that.

That being said, shooting starts in February. That’s six months from now, plenty of time to train and get those muscles in. It’s not like we’re talking about a Christian Bale Machinist-Batman transformation here. (Which, now that I think about it, happened in about six months, right?)

      • Magaray

Wasn’t sure if people were reading this blog.  Very pleased to see Marjolaf21 is on line.  You are right about Mel’s athleticism.  She is fast and is surprised when Jared catches her while fleeing the house she was robbing.  She also is strong enough to save Kyle at the hot river.  If I had not seen Soirse in Hana, I would not have been confident about her casting.  The fans of “The Host” are passionate about the casting.  I have read the Hunger Games.  Katnis is slight with dark hair.  She must fight (and kill) Tributes.  My point?  Have you seen Jennifer Lawrence?  Plllleeeze!  Now that casting scares me.

        • Sunshine

word. I just finished the first hunger games book last night and I gotta say Im not thrilled with her being cast either. I just truly think ronan is wrong for this tho. by a LONG shot.

        • Guest

omg i know right? she is really wrong for the part of katniss!

      • Emily

Ronan is strong but she isnt tall like in the book so..

    • Tortuga_power539

The only reason you don’t see her fighting much is because Wanda is in control but through her memories you can tell that she is a fighter, through her thoughts you are shown her strength. This little pale blonde girl will have alot of work ahead of her to convince us all that she can be Melanie.

      • Jill

Which means we don’t ACTUALLY see Mel fighting. You’re nitpicking and it’s obvious. Passionate fan fail.

  • Magaray

I am curious who the fans of “The Host” would like to see play key characters in the Book:
Jeb…Jared. Ian, Doc, Kyle, Sharon, Jaime, Seeker, Healer, who else?  No need to vote for Wandered/Melanie.  She has been cast.

    • Annie Moore

Jeff Bridges would be good forJjeb i think 🙂

      • Annie Moore

i actually got fooled into  thinking this was the real thing, it looks good 🙂

  • Susan

Jensen Eckles is the only one I can picture as Jared.   As Jeb I can’t think of anyone I would cast but there has been some good suggestions. As Mel’s little brother I have no idea except my grandson :).  He would be perfect but has only been in minor roles.

  • Brittttany

    I can’t wait…The Host is such a great story!

  • Ianlover

Just finished reading the book! It was amazing!!!!! I am sure steph m, has a lot to do with the casting and story line. Trust whoever is cast will be exactly how they want the character portrayed. I can’t wait to see who plays Ian 😉 he was my fav boy character 😉 I tend to relate to supporting characters, even though Jared was amazing I felt connecters to Mel and wanderer, the obvious love of Jared wasn’t as interesting to me as the Ian Wanda connection. I know im weird but I hope whoever it is that plays him is a newbie, an up and comer. Like they did with reiley in eclipse, Xavier Samuel was a perfect reiley!!!! I can’t wait for more news!!!!!

  • emores

They should have cast Kayla Ewell as Melanie. I always picture her when I read the book.

    • Magaray

Pretty girl.  5’7″.  Can she act?

  • Marjolein

Please let Ian Somerhalder play Ian, that will be great!!
Why does it have to take so long before the movie will be in the theatres??
(Don’t answer that, it was a retorical question XD)

  • Mbennett110

I wished Olivia Wilde would be Melanie. But Saoirse does not look like a bad candidate but she is only 16 that seems a little young for this part i would expect someone to be around 20-24.

    • Mbennett110

      or Ashley Greene

  • Anonymous

Her hair is the wrong colour! Her eyes are the wrong colour! She doesn’t have muscles like Venus Williams! They’re just some of the silly objections Ive read, as to why Ronan will “ruin the film!”.
What’s going to make “The Host” work will be how good an actress Ronan is and whether the supporting cast can act and not how ‘gorgeous’ they are!
A good script will be vital as well.

    • Magaray

So true Josephjoe. Ronan is 17 years old and will be almost 18 when filming starts.  Melanie was 17 when she first ran into Jared.  The script will be a major contributer to the success of the film.  The Host is a drama and Ronan will need to carrie the film.  Olivia Wilde is eye candy.

  • TheBeginner

You should have a section where we can post things about what fans want on the sound track. I totally think Clipping by Mutemath would be so perfect. Just listed to the lyrics and tell me it wouldn’t be perfect!

  • JoriOne

Please no! Ronan can’t be playing Mel, she’s a great actor, but I really don’t think she’s right for the part! Mila Kunis would be better for the part… Doesn’t she just seem more… Mel-ish to you?

    • Magaray

I like Mila.  She was great in FWB.  However, Mel needs to be tough.  Answer me this, have you seen Ronan in Hanna.  If you have and still think Mila is a better Mel, then I will respectfully agree to disagree. If you have not seen Hanna, you are not in a position to dismiss Ronan as Mel.  By the way, wanting Mila as Mel is a Moot point. Saoirse is Mel/Wanda.

    • Cvhargrove83

I can deff. see Mila as Mel! Roran is great, and loved Hanna, but she is so wrong for Mel. Stryder is older, more of an athletic build, TAN, and all AMERICAN. I have heard rumors on other sites about a few of the other actors as well, all young, great looking people but not what I envisioned at all for any of these characters. I just hope that I can get past the crew. I know I was never able to get over the choice of Edward for the twilight series.

  • Sammielilly

    what in two years 🙁

    • Susan

It takes time to make a movie.  There is a movie currently being advertised in movie theatres that says it is coming soon but I know the movie is still being filmed.  Can’t say more but I do know that it is a long process.

  • Susan

Let’s wait to see the movie before we judge Ronan’s performance.  Jennifer Lawrence is going to make a great Katniss, just wait and see.

  • Angelicalizarraga97

    where can piople be extras

  • mcg

You need to see Hanna. She is PERFECT for this role!!! Go team Saoirse Ronan!

  • Jed

Ronan is an amazing actor, but completely wrong for this roll. The host is an astonishing story, it would be such a shame for it to be ruined by poor casting. So very sad too…

  • MissSexyLexyLOu

Melanie stryder, if saorise ronan plays melaine it will ruin it. She looks to young and not something that Stephanie meyer has described her as. She looks too young and not strong enough. Jensen ankles should play jared in the host he is an amazing actor I love him and he does not look to old was they are meant to be like 20,21. Maybe ronan should la the girl at the end where wands is insterted into that young looking body bat the end. Ronan just looks to delicate

  • Savvie

Not really a fan of her. I have this gut feeling that she’s not going to do a good job. She better not ruin it because it’s one of my fav books.

    • Jill

Doing a good job, especially in acting, rests mainly on acting chops. Ronan has those, and in spades.

Max Irons is playing Jared Howe
Jake Abel is playing Ian O’Shea
And I think that Saoirse Ronan is great

  • Madridgirl15

Also Ronan is 18 years old

  • kizzy_123

gosh i think ronan should play Pet the body Wanda takes in the end! not Melanie!!!!

  • Deniqua Frye

I don’t think she should play Melanie. She played Hannah in the semi oldmovie Hannah last year and she looked 13! She’s 19! And the guy they picked to play Ian is ugly! I hate him! The gut that’s playing Jared can get it(after we’re married lol), he’s too hot for the actor of Mel, and no one fits the description, Doc’s black! Jamie is suppose to be 13+, the actor looks 9-UGHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  • kelley_abbey@yahoo.com

i think this move will be GREAT
